What is the best way to learn Chinese characters?
Should I focus on learning Chinese characters each on their own, or should I learn them in compounds?
Learn them on their own first. You should aim to memorize and recognize the 200-500 most popular characters.
This can be done by memorizing 5-7 characters per day, or using online flashcards such as http://learnchinese.tv/chinese_tools/flashcards.php
Try sicking Chinese characters around you house so you are constantly seeing them. i.e. on your fridge, back of the toilet door etc.
Once you have a good grasp of the most popular ones you can start maybe signing Karaoke, and seeing the words will help character recognition.
Writing is also a great way to memorize characters, when you get further on.
Definitely learn the most popular first, and when you have the foundations it is easy to increase your vocabulary with compounds. Compounds are easy as many chinese words are formed by putting two characters with the meaning together, so they just make sense and are easy to remember.
